Description of Asthma!
Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease that is characterized by coughing, chest constriction and sudden recurring attacks of labored breathing. It was discovered by a Greek physician during 460-357 BC, Hippocrates. There are many different types of asthma.

Types of Asthma:
  • Allergic Asthma- trigged by an allergic reaction you have.
  • Non-Allergic Asthma- triggered by substances in the air. (tobacco, smoke, wood, perfume, etc)
  • Nocturnal Asthma- refers to asthma symptoms that are worse in the middle of the night. (typically between 2AM and 4AM)
  • Occupational Asthma- refers to asthma that is caused by exposure of a substance.


Symptoms:
  • Wheezing
  • Coughing
  • Chest tightness
  • Shortness of Breath

Things That Trigger Asthma:
  • Smoking
  • Dust mites
  • pets
  • cockroaches
  • indoor mold
  • strong odors
  • pollen
  • excercise
  • colds



Researchers in Arizona performed a test to see if asthma
runs in families. They tested 344 families. The results
are in the chart below.
Families with neither parent having asthma
6% of the children had asthma
Families with one parent having asthma
20% of the children had asthma
Families with both parents having asthma
60% of the children had asthma
